The steam vent on my pot lid doubles as a thermometer holder.

Its all fun and games until your thermometer gets turned into a ballistic missile when you leave the heat on too long.

These comments are ridiculous – the lid isn’t attached and this isn’t making ‘a bomb’ lol

    3. ITT: people who have never left a lid on a pan that doesn’t have a hole in it.

That shit just rattles around and lets steam out brothers, it’s fine.

People talking about the pot exploding are not very bright… The lid is just sitting on the pot, not secured to it in any way, nor is it creating a perfect, tight seal to the pot. If the thermometer is blocking the hole completely, the worst that will happen is the pressure will vent out between the lid and pot. Some people really don’t understand the simplest physics lol.

All these comments are from people who failed physics in high school.

    6. That is interesting as a thermometer port for checking something cooking, but just leaving it there is wasting your battery.

    7. people are expressing concern about positive pressure buildup, but that’s not what the hole is for as far as i know; if i remember correctly, the hole is to allow air *into* the pot after you take it off the heat, so that when the air **in the pot** cools down, you don’t end up with a negative pressure chamber (a slight vacuum) and a ton of atmospheric pressure pressing down on the glass, making removing the lid difficult and potentially dangerous.

the thermometer there is fine. if it made a very snug fit i guess you could warrant some concern about leaving it there when you turn the heat off, but as long as air can get in (or you can slide the thermometer out), you should be fine. it’s possible to end up in a weird situation where the lid is surprisingly difficult to take off the pot, but i feel like most adults should be able to muddle through that situation by trying a couple of non-destructive ideas.

    8. But if it is simmering its near enough 100C and no more. So what does the thermometer tell you?

This is just a dumb way to use a thermopen. You’re gonna wreck the internal components exposing the body to sustained high heat and moisture. You’re also not getting an accurate temperature read using it like that.

    10. Personally I wouldn’t do this as the hot vent ring is touching near the base part of the probe and it may cause the circuit in the body to overheat.

This thermometer is designed to be operated hand held and have only few cm of the probe touching the hot food. Most of its user manual explicitly warns against leaving it leaning against the pot wall.

Sometimes this gives you an inaccurate measurement if the probe is resting on the bottom of the pan, since the metal will quickly transfer heat into the probe.

    12. *Me: There sure are a lot of comments about comments regarding pressure, surely there can’t be tha- …….ohhhh there they are.*

    13. I’m fascinated how this very simple post has managed to attract some really dumb and combative people within just an hour. Especially since this sub is usually very chill.

I do this too! Though sometimes it shakes the lid because it’s such a perfect fit in the hole and knocks it out

    15. DwarvenRedshirt on

Checked and it does fit on my lids with that vent, but never even thought about it. Maybe because there’s nothing I cook with a lid like that where I’d want to check the temperature. Anyone know if this is a planned “feature” or just a happy coincidence?

    16. Ignoring all of the idiotic comments… this post is basically just “hey my lid has a hole in it” and thats also not mildly interesting

    17. Nothin_Means_Nothin on

I have that same thermometer. Cheaper than ThermoWorx or ThermoPro or whatever it’s called. Inkbird is the brand

    18. Depends upon how it’s marketed. I have a crockpot / smoker that has a silicone plug and it’s specifically listed as a hole for a thermometer or temperature probe.

    19. TheRealTinfoil666 on

      Hmmm.

That will be useful the next time I need to know the temperature of stuff boiling in my pot.

    20. I’ve never needed to test a temperature of a pot with a lid on…

If i was frying somthing then the lid is always off as I dont want boiling hot oil to bubble and pour out between the pot and lid 😂

What sort of food would you need to do this? As I clearly have no clue? 😂

    21. Why are you measuring milk’s temperature? Do people do that? I just stop the heat as soon as it starts boiling.
